WORMS OF WORSHIP

The brother had preached the eternal body all his life. The earth thought little of his reading.

When his grave was opened many years later, because the monastery wall was to be extended, almost nothing was left of his vestments. The cross on his chest had turned black, and between the ribs lay soil.

Only a small note in the coffin had survived. On it the monk had written a single sentence in his lifetime: “What remains of me belongs to God.”

The gravedigger read it, looked at what was moving in the jaw, and remarked that God evidently worked with subcontractors.
