When the old master died, his students laid the blade upon his chest and sealed the grave before sunset. The next morning it lay in the training room again, cleaned of earth and blood and freshly sharpened, as though someone had gone on teaching in the night. Wet footprints led across the floorboards to the middle of the room. There they ended, before a single mat. Since then every practice begins with a bow to the empty place.
