The Forest of the Impaled takes up one of the best-known historical woodcuts of Vlad Țepeș and carries it on as a coloured patch version. The true harshness of the motif lies not in the bodies alone. It lies in the calm of the man at the table, dining among the impaled as though their sight belonged to the ordinary order of his court. No grand Transylvania legend and no supernatural transfiguration. Only a ruler, a laid table and the question of how often one has to see death before it becomes part of the landscape.
